Has anyone else noticed that the word “engaged” (as in, to be married) is en-gag-ed?
I hope that when I am engaged I am also en-gag-ed.

Well, engagement does imply a certain kind of bondage. As Ambrose Bierce defined the institution in “The Devil’s Dictionary”: ‘MARRIAGE, n. The state or condition of a community consisting of a master, a mistress and two slaves, making in all, two.”
