A Thought

My Dom friend in Boston, on my comment that I thought my DIY erotica was too sub-centric:

“I think if all porn were made, first and foremost, to satisfy the people who were making it, porn would be a lot hotter and generally less yicky.”

In other words, write what makes you horny.

Yes, Sir!

This is definitely true. I mean, it’s not exactly a perfect solution — when it comes to pornography (and erotica is very often just pornography with a fancier name) then it can be pretty distracting when you come across parts of the story that don’t make you horny. But that’s true regardless of how the writer approaches it, unless he approaches it by psychically invading your mind. But when it comes to erotic writing the chief element that makes it believable (and therefore sexy and awesome) is a total commitment to the story. And that’s more likely to happen if the writer is writing his own fantasies and not crafting ones he thinks might have a “broader appeal.” So keep it up1 I haven’t actually read either installment yet (because I keep peeking at this site at work, which is fine for reading most of your post, but I’ll have to free up some appropriate erotica time!) but I’m sure it works just fine, subcentric though it may be.

So, I finally found the, umm . . . time . . . to read your erotica. All three parts have been pretty hot but I have to say I especially loved the second piece. Both the second and third installments definitely fit in with my own fantasies (although perhaps not any actual cages.) So I definitely approve. But I’m writing this here to follow up on what your friend said about your concerns regarding sub-centric writing. I have to say that, for me at least, this sort of writing is probably a BIGGER turn on than something more dom-centric. The second piece especially, with its anxious closeness and desire for release and bound/gagged/blindfolded isolation is almost impossible to write about from the Dom’s perspective — he’s not even there! But beyond that problem, I think this works for me for the following two reasons: from the sub’s perspective the future is unknowable, and the fact that you (and the reader) don’t know what’s going to happen next is precisely what’s so hot about it. From the Dom’s perspective everything is justified in some way, reasons and desires and punishments and arousal all have to either be documented or explained away, and in this kind of scene I just think it’s a lot hotter from the position of the unknowing sub who has to take what’s given whether he likes it, anticipates it, understands it or not. The second reason is that I am at least (and usually more) turned on by the psychological ramnifications of BDSM. And being inside the boy’s head fulfills that sort of desire, to know how fear/desire/frustration/resistancce/etc play out in the boy’s mind.

Also, the latest installment was pretty hot! I’m a big fan of complex, semi-pointless rules so the structure of that one was quite enjoyable. ;)

      Comments! Yay! =)

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. As I continue to do this sort of writing I need to find new ways of keeping it interesting. Yes, hot-ness can make up for bad writing I suppose, but I’d rather try to write well-written hot-ness than just bad hot-ness. So I appreciate your comments from a Dom’s POV.

For me much of what turns me on is the psychological stuff. In the moment that’s sometimes hard for me to key into, especially when I’m getting all this pain that I’m taking not because I want to but because he wants to give it, or he wants me to feel it. So when I write I can step back and examine what it is that makes me so aroused by those particular situations.

Also, yes, thanks for reminding me that not everyone is into cages. It’s always good to change stuff up, and I will try to avoid continual reference to the cage.

  3. As a reaction top, I’m much more turned on by sub-centric erotica. I’m not particularly interested in what the top feels, I want to know how the sub is doing.
