Montana Sam
I was at a talk this week given by a Buddhist nun in the Tibetan tradition. As an aside she spoke about how people in Tibet often refer to people with nicknames based on where they are from, and said that this would be like calling someone “Tex” or “Montana.” For some reason I liked “Montana” and decided that, if I were a cowboy, I’d be “Montana Sam.” It sounds way more butch than I could ever pull off, but I like it. =)
I don’t know if you know this but I am from Montana! Montana Josh isn’t as butch as Montana Sam, though. (as a totally unnecessary aside: this style of nicknaming is one of the chief ways — along with patronyms, occupations and physical traits — by which Europeans gained their surnames.)

Yes! You’d told me you’re from Montana but I’d forgotten. I was thinking then I’d be Sam Montana, which I really like, but bring to mind thoughts of a certain football player. I suppose that still retains its butch flavor.
